Stakeholder Workshop on “Scaling-up EU cultivation of Shellfish and Algae

The study aimed to answer the questions: How much non-fed aquaculture can we produce within offshore wind farms ? Is the food fit for eating? What is the impact on nutrient balance?

The first results of the CINEA study will serve as a basis for workshop discussions – focusing on the scenarios of shellfish and aquaculture production as well as their socio-economic implications.

More in detail, the workshop aims to:

  • Present the results of the study;
  • Collate feedbacks and comments that can strengthen the approach applied and results obtained towards the finalisation of the study; propose and discuss possible applications and uses of the modelling platform (at different levels, and for different decision-making processes) beside the scenarios run as part of the project; and
  • Discuss key areas that would require further investigation, developments and research beyond the scope of the present study.

The agenda

The workshop will include presentations from the study team as well as interventions from European experts on shellfish and algae cultivation, to represent and account for the wide array of initiatives that are currently on-going on this topic.

While the detailed agenda is under development (thus also including external speakers), the main sessions have already been defined, as shown below.

TimingSession
14:00Welcome and presentation of workshop objectives and agenda
14:15Session I: Scaling-up EU cultivation of algae & shellfish – Presenting the CINEA study
Scaling up shellfish and algae cultivation in the EU: study presentation, and key messages from the previous study (including the potential of algae to fix CO2, and the potential of shellfish to use up nitrogen)
Insights from the current study: use of Copernicus and EMODnet data, and first results of the modelling
Facilitated discussion: What further research, improvements in data would improve our forecasting ability?
15:10Session II: Bringing a societal perspective to shellfish and algae production scenarios – Insights from the CINEA study
The results of the socio-economic assessment in the CINEA study
Keynote speech
Questions and discussion
15:40Coffee break
16:00Session III - Breakout group session: how to improve our results?

Participants will split into four groups to discuss:

  • The results of the project and the socio-economic assessment;
  • Outstanding knowledge gaps that need to be filled to be able to (i) develop significant scenarios, and (ii) properly map the socio-economic aspects; and
  • Future priorities for maturing interactive modelling platforms.
16:40Session IV – Expert panel discussion: Key areas that would further research and developments

Structure of the panel:

  • Tour de table – who is who (five experts)
  • 5 minutes presentation by each expert on their work
  • Facilitated discussion, organized around key questions.
17:15Closing session
17:30End of the workshop

By joining the workshop, you will:

  • Learn more about the ongoing study on Scaling-up EU Shellfish and Algae cultivation;
  • Provide your valuable contribution to the discussion, helping to strengthen the study’s approach and results;
  • Meet a wide range of stakeholders in the low trophic aquaculture sector from all over Europe.

Eager to join the discussions? You can register to the workshop by clicking here

While registering, you will be able to choose whether to attend in presence or online. Please note that limited places will be available on site – thus, if you wish to attend in person, we advise you to register as soon as possible. For full transparency, the project team cannot cover for travel expenditures of experts attending in person.

Registrations to the workshop are open until May 30th
